So after all that ranting about how great cloth nappies are, you are probably wondering why I have a page for disposables on this website? I think cloth nappies are fantastic for so many reasons, but if you have a read under our FAQ or newborn page you will see that we do recommend starting with disposables for those first busy weeks. Don't try to be supermum, or you will be heading for a fall! So we all admit there may be times when you need to rely on a disposable. For everyone it is different - some people use them for those early days, some for holidays or travelling, some prefer them for nights. After many years in the nappy business we have been asked many times for our recomendations for "green" disposables, but to be honest all we ever heard in feedback was how useless most eco-friendly disposables are. Finally we have found a brand that we think is the best enviromentally-aware, health-conscious disposable around, so we have decided to offer them here as an option for those Too Hard Days.
Luxus Muumi are a Finnish brand with a silly name, but serious purpose. They meet the strict Nordic Swan Label environment criteria. No waste from manufacturing Muumi nappies is brought to landfill as all production waste is burned for energy. The absorbent core of the nappy is made of fully biodegradable totally chlorine-free pulp (TFC). Only environment-friendly oxygen, and no chlorine chemicals, is used in manufacturing the pulp. The wood for the pulp is not harvested from old grown forests. The Muumi packaging is made of environmentally friendly, biodegradable materials. You can reuse it as a bio waste bag as it is fully compostable. These nappies are made in collaboration with the Finnish league of Allergy and Asthma for a better care of your baby’s health. Scent-free. Chlorine-free. Contain no optical brighteners, latex formaldehyde or phthalates. Dermatologically tested.

Yeah, all that jazz. Of course I still think reusable nappies are cheaper and greener and better, but well, life just isn't really that black and white. Especially not when you add babies. So if you have to go with some disposables, through some stages, then I reckon these are at least a thoughtful option. OhBaby rated them the top disposable nappy in the Golden Nappy Awards so you can be assured that they actually work. Plus they are based on the Moomin books and have really sweet pictures on if you happened to grow up with these guys. . . |
